At the request of the Vanuatu Government, AusAID is currently providing support to the Vanuatu Land Sector to assist with progressing National Land Summit resolutions.
In 2007, a government review of the land sector mapped out short-term and long-term strategies for addressing the summit resolutions. In 2008, AusAID was asked to support the Vanuatu Short-Term Land Reform Initiatives.
AusAID's support to the Vanuatu land sector emphasizes a country-driven approach. This means that any support to the land sector is at the request of Vanuatu and is driven by Vanuatu.
Since the 2006 National Land Summit, the National Land Steering Committee, with the DG of Lands as the Chair, has been responsible for directing any land activities in Vanuatu.
From it, multiple Projects have arisen such as the launching of the e-Registry and the creation of the Land Sector Framework.
AusAID commenced interim assistance in early 2008, funding seven short-term activities under the twelve-month Vanuatu Short-term Land Reform Initiatives (VSTLRI) including:
Public Awareness - This has been achieved primarily through the launching of this Website and, Communication Workshops. For 2010, there are further plans for the launching of an email newsletter via the Government Intranet.
Land Lease Compliance - This Project deals with identifying and dealing with problems and breaches related to leases. More Info...
Assistance to Land Registry - This has been achieved through the automation and computerization of its manual functions through a new system called the e-Land Registry. More Info...
Strata Title and Subdivision Controls - Thus far, a Strata Title Workshop was held that assisted the Government in establishing its position on Strata Title with a number of recommendations being made as well that a Position Paper is being prepared by DoL staff.
